Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, fiends, and malevolent powers increasing in power within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure are included.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The latest chapter ended with a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will branch out from the primary party to begin their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.

This warrior group consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Introduction, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might look unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose passing started the narrative’s action—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his debts and fled to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, wants retribution.
  • The adventurer is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • However, their position as important members in the influential clan could help the group enter places they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are sought by the authorities that rule the setting for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This results in them no alternative but to travel to the remote area in search of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From the recent installment’s follow-up content, we learn that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Questers and Planners groups.

Fans can anticipate learning which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
