The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
