Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
