The Video Platform Offers Users Power to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that permits them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is being tested over the following weeks before a widespread rollout. This development aligns with a increase in content created by AI, fueled by new video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that nearly one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, factory-style content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to give people the ability to adjust the amount of that, according to their own likes,” commented a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are currently over a billion videos on its network identified as made with AI. Collectively, more than 100 m videos are submitted to the app daily, making clips made by AI a limited portion of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI content they see by using the “manage topic” option in the app and picking “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be modified under the filter cover politics, clothing, aesthetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s rules mandate users to identify lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits dangerous fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the platform will now apply an artificially created tag to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This action is intended to stop users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also introducing a $2m awareness program for professionals and institutions to produce learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will support charitable organizations focused on teaching programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, during discussion over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation division in the UK capital, with labor groups and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content before it is viewed by people. The platform reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference operate efficiently.”
