Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
